Following an undergraduate degree in Art History where he explored an interest in material culture, he worked in native plant horticulture, deepening his understanding of California gardening. In design, he is interested in the sustainability, ecology, and contextualization of a site. Gabby holds a Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Her interest in native landscapes along with minors in both sustainable environments and architecture greatly influence her design approach to create spaces that connect users to their surrounding ecology. Ben has been an integral member of Ground Studio since 2010 and has contributed to a wide range of award-winning projects as one of the firm’s five Partners. His passion for design has been shaped by his background in fine arts and sculpture, imbued by a deep value for the essential relationship of form to the experience of landscape.

It was here that he developed a lasting awareness and appreciation of the native landscape that led to horticultural and design studies. Following an apprenticeship, he was awarded a scholarship that allowed him to move to England and study under the famed plantswoman and garden designer Beth Chatto. Her regionally appropriate planting designs further developed Bernard’s design philosophy and subsequently the direction of his landscape designs that followed. In the years that followed Bernard then completed a Diploma of Landscape Design while studying at the Chelsea Physic Garden. Landscape architecture is dedicated to the design of healthy environments and communities, and to protecting the health, safety, and welfare of people.

Ben’s work is marked by a sensitivity to materiality with an instinct for bringing site and detail together as a whole. Informed by a poetic and restrained design ethos, Ben is a licensed Landscape Architect and holds an MLA degree from Texas A&M University, as well as a BFA in Sculpture from the University of North Texas. In practice, the geographical diversity of his educational and work experiences cultivated a deep appreciation for California’s unique regional qualities and culture. “Whilst traveling I soon discovered my favorite art, architecture and landscapes are deeply connected to the place from which they have ‘grown’ ”. This simple observation and a keen awareness of the regional context inform every design project.

After completing an undergraduate degree in political science and environmental studies from Kenyon College he received his MLA from Kent State University. Conner’s passion for the field derives from his academic and professional experience in legacy city landscapes. His design work celebrates and is inspired by the ecological and cultural history of a place, and he strives to create a more harmonious balance between the built environment and the natural world. A California native, he joins us from Los Angeles where he has a history of working and collaborating in various facets of design.
Creative landscaping architectural design increases the aesthetic splendor of the house and property and helps to conceal any unpleasant flaws. With a passion for the outdoors, she continues to enjoy being surrounded by all the natural beauty between the Gabilan and Santa Lucia mountain ranges, as she has throughout her life. She also appreciates the human diversity on the Peninsula, and loves expanding her knowledge of various local cultures.
Michelle came to Ground Studio with 25+ years of experience in Office Administration. After growing up in Portland, she moved to CA and worked for a Bay Area construction company, spending over 22 years in accounting, HR and customer service. He held two design research positions at Cal Poly which greatly influenced his design philosophy of achieving ecologically resilient and regenerative designs. Furthermore, his keen interest in photography and cinematography informs a robust understanding of user experience that translates into every design decision. He is a licensed Landscape Architect, earning his BLA degree from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
Located in Santa Monica, we take pride in the rich and complex terrain of Southern California. Every site is unique in both need and opportunity, and we love the challenge of perfecting the art of outdoor living. After completing an undergraduate degree in Environmental Studies with a minor in Spatial Studies from the University of Redlands, he received his Master’s in Landscape Architecture from the University of Colorado, Denver. His previous work in the field affords him a unique perspective when designing, and he strives to create spaces that pull people outside.

Her love of organization, communication, numbers, and a willingness to take on any task bring a tangible benefit to the office daily. Existing site patterns are a repository of meaning; there are clues within this complexity both in presence and purpose. By celebrating and building upon the patterns of each place, rather than manipulating them, a true sense of belonging in the landscape is revealed. To express our ideas with clarity we develop a narrative flow to help tell the story of these patterns, beginning with images, sketches, and diagrams to illustrate functional relationships and important connections. In 2009 she co-founded the Greater LA District Chapter of APLD, and in 2012 served as California Chapter President.
Our open space strategies serve the needs of the greater community while skillfully knitting together diverse building programs. Finally, an outdoor living space can become more pleasant, hence appealing, with the use of trees and shrubs to block out noise, invite in pollinators, and help people escape their normal surroundings. Each design solution reflects its location, program, and community to craft meaningful connections between people, places, and nature. After running her own Bookkeeping business, she joined Ground Studio in 2014 and has proven invaluable to the office ever since.
